Phil Collins - no, not that one!

I know what you're thinking, but no, I am not gonna write about that Phil Collins that first comes to your mind. I am writing about Turner Prize Nominee, British Video Artist Phil Collins. I met him when he presented his work "Return of the Real" at the ZKM Münster. This piece documents what happened to people who appeared in a reality TV show in Turkey and how their appearance on the screen affected their lives. It was one of those rainy summer days in 2007, the sculpture projects münster 07 had ravaged the city and right before the opening panel dicussion was about to start te heavens opened and poured heavy showers down onto the earth. Therefore not many made their way into the ZKM, but we would not be nog nog if we let ourselves be scared away from art by a few gallons of rain! So we were among the few who listened to his charming Scottish accent and and had a beer and a chat with him afterwards. But it is not his boyish charme he kept into his late 30s, the hints of a beer belly around his hips or the sympathic gesture with which he gave us beer, but his connection to Southeastern Europe, namely Serbia. Having lived in Belgrade for a while before comming to Berlin, one of his newer pieces has to be inspired by this period: "zasto ne govorim srpski (na srpskom)— “why I don’t speak Serbian (in Serbian)" about Albanians in Kosovo who used to speak Serbian but pretend to have forgotten it since the Albanian independence. The new Vampire Weekend album Contra will be released in little more than a week. With Contra Vampire Weekend keeps to the same sound as their previous self titled album. Personally I'm really into the cover of the new album. It's an old Polaroid from 1983. Ezra Koenig compared it to the Mona Lisa, that you can read all different kind of things into her facial expression. I think it just fits perfect.

Umelec Magazine since 1997 is the only art magazine devoted to current visual culture in the Czech Republic. It is directed to the international scene, particularly the wider European circle. Its emphasis on art in Central and Eastern Europe stems from its unique position in that region. It's published in English, Czech, Spanish, German, French, Russian and also Chinese. Personally I never heard of it till I got my hands at two issues from 2009 2 weeks ago. I really like this Magazine, especially because I don't know that much of the Czech art scene. Massive Attack is back! After the more or less solo-released Album 100th Window in 2003, Daddy G is back on board. Daddy G, who last been involved in Mezzanine, seems happy to be back. In an Interview in Lodown Magazine he said " It's really good to be back, it's just good to start being creative again." To be honest I didn't really care for 100th Window, so I'm happy that Daddy G is involved again and I'm excited about the new Album. In the just mentioned Interview Daddy G also said something I can only agree with: "Our thing is with Massive Attack music, it's a case of sometimes you have to listen to our records three or four times before you can actually get the gist of what we are talking about, whether it is the lyrical side or whether it is the musical side." What do you think?

So apparently there is a new Robin Hood movie comin out with Russell Crowe aka the Gladiator in the role of Robin Hood and Cate Blanchett in the role of Lady Marian. To be honest I really don't see the point in doing another Robin Hood movie. I think the one from 1991 with Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Christian Slater and Alan Rickman is and will always be the best. Don't you think? And I mean the Soundtrack as well. How you wanna top Bryan Adams' Everything I do, I do it for you. Don't understand me wrong, I think Cate Blanchett is a terrific actress, but some movies just shouldn't be done over and over again.

Poetry Slam at Peperoni

Tonight, I for once did not work but went to the Poetry Slam at Peperoni. The Slam at Peperoni takes place every last saturday of the month and attracts every time a big crowd. The Slam is called "Die Wa(h)lnuss" and it's all about the Poetry and the crowd who in the end votes the Winner! The Place Peperoni is actually a greengrocery which makes the Slam definitely unique. It has it's special charm if you listen to texts surrounded by vegetables, don't you think? Host is der Marian, also a quite well known local Slammer. The Slam not only attracts a lot of local Slammers but also Slammers from all over NRW. In general there are a lot of Slams you can got to here in Münster. The one at Cuba Nova, which takes place every second Monday of the month, is one of the biggest in NRW. You should definitely check it out. Tonight I really liked Andreas Weber who is kind of the local matador. He organizes the Slam at Cuba Nova. This time he talked about projectors and christmas. Hilarious, I tell you. Here is another one of his performances from another Slam at Peperoni. Enjoy!

Whatever paper I hold in my hands the last couple of weeks almost everytime I found an article about German-Iranian artist Bettina Pousttchi and her Installation Echo. Echo is a black and white photo installation displayed on the exterior of the Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin. The installation consists of almost 1000 single images, which were eerily manipulated by digital processing and entirely cover the four outer walls of the building. Together they evoke memories of the former Palace of the Republic. One aspect of her installation which I find interesting is the fact that it is exposed to all kind of environmental influences like e.g. the weather. It will be fascinating to see how much Berlins' winter will have left of it by the time the exhibition ends (February 2010).

Jennifer Maestre is a South African Artist who does create this amazing skulptures with the use of pencils or nails. Among other things she is inspired by animals and plants, which you can perfectly see in work. To make the pencil sculptures, she takes hundreds of pencils, cuts them into 1-inch sections, drills a hole in each section (to turn them into beads), sharpens them all and sews them together. This week I came across the exhibition Shared.Divided.United, Germany - Korea: Migration Movements during the Cold War. It's an exhibition under the auspices of the NGBK at three Exhibition Locations (@ NGBK, Oranienstr. 25, Berlin; @GfKFB, Am Flutgraben 3, 12435 Berlin; @ Border Watch-Tower Schlesischer Busch opposite the studio building on the Flutgraben, 12435 Berlin). Unfortunately I only had the chance to see the exhibition at NGBK. Germany and Korea are linked together by the "divided and shared history" which unites them. The two countries were both front-line states in the Cold War - and are at the same time both marked by a history of division. The exhibition puts on display works by 15 contemporary artists and artits's group from Germany and Korea. Focus of the exhibition is the migration movements that took place between Germany and Korea. The exhibition is on view till 15 November 2009, daily 12-19 hrs, Thurs-Sats 12-20 hrs and is for free! by us

5 minutes ago I had no idead who Florence + the Machine were, but listen to songs like Drumming I'm totally impressed by their serious talent. I think Florence Welch's voice is amazing and very haunting. And being a redhead myself I'm always partial to a redhair singer! Another thing I love about this Band is their choice of naming their songs, e.g. Kiss with a fist or My Boy builds coffins. Great, right? Maybe it has to do with the fact that Florence Welch writes, according to the band's homepage, "her best songs when she’s drunk or has a hangover". You go, girl! Lodown Magazine went old school with their first DTP Issue. They didn't layout it entirely on the computer, but instead used old phototype methods. The format (it's about 14' x 11' inches) is not the most easy one to handle but I do appreciate it a lot. In this Issue it's all about art. It's "a picture book of obscurity" to quote Thomas Mareki, Publisher of Lodown Magazine. I just can say that I really enjoyed it! us

I really haven't slept a full night in ages. Okay, I'm a little exaggerating here. It's maybe been a week or so but it sure feels like ages. Don't really know why, but every morning I wake up even more tired than I was when I went to bed the night before. I always dream strange things...I mean really strange stuff like one night I chased horses and was decorating a room and was making out with some king of some country which was basically an island surrounded by a small moat in some park. I know what you're thinkin' but no I'm not crazy! The other night I dreamed about speaking Spanish so bad that I actually woke up because of it. Weird! Today I came across this great video by Oren Lavie and I can't help wondering if I look like this when I am sleeping/dreaming?! Would definitely explain some things. us

Good radio stations are treasures and unfortunately hard to find and if found usually somewhere outta reach of my poor little radio alarm. But waking up with Lady Gaga at least kicks me outta bed - if only to silence the radio alarm with a harsh movement the poor thing does not deserve.
Thank God there is livestreaming! Thank God I can listen to my all-time favourite radio station, Austrias fm4 again! They play the good stuff, and in the morning, the program is in English which is soothing to hear if you can't stand the Austrian accent in the early morning.
Listening to fm4 is a bit like browsing through a massive excellent op shop: real treasures among wrong sizes and sometimes awkward colors.
Today, they played one of those treasures: firewater. It may be trendy to go for oriental folk elements mixed with Jazz and Ska, but these guys come across very authentic and unique. And they are playing Viennas Ost Klub tonight, which is a pretty cool venue. Plus, entiteling your first album "get off the Cross, we need the Wood for Fire" shows a great deal of blasphemy, which is always a plus in my opinion.
Listen in and catch them on their European tour.

Beim surfen durchs Netz bin ich letztens auf das Museum der Dinge in Berlin gestoßen. Für jemanden wie mich, der Krimskrams, Kitsch und schräge Dinge liebt, also perfekt. Das Museum der Dinge hat alles mögliche zu bieten, vom Pfeffersteuer in Hasenform bis zum alten Fernseher, Kerzenleuchter, Hammer über Wachsbüsten, Staubwedel bis hin zur Kugelwaschmaschine. Zusätzlich gibt es jeden Monat das "Ding des Monats", welches zurzeit ein ziemlich cooles Paar Obama-Kindersneakers ist (s. Foto). Und dann gibt es da auch noch die Museumswundertüten, die man aus einem Automaten ziehen kann. So eine Tüte beinhaltet mehrere Kleinigkeiten, ein Kommentar und was Süßes, sozusagen das Ü-Ei für's Museum. Super Idee, oder? Was es mir aber vor allem angetan hat, sind die Pflegschaften, die man übernehmen kann. Wenn man möchte kann man sich eines bestimmten Dinges annehmen und symbolisch sozusagen dessen "Dingpfleger" für ein Jahr werden. Ich überlege ernsthaft, ob ich nicht so eine Pflegschaft übernehmen soll. Hab da auch schon so meine Favoriten. Mal sehen. Welches würdet ihr denn pflegen wollen? us

Nein, er ist nicht wirklich auf der Flucht, aber Fakt ist, dass der Westfälische Kunstverein aufgrund des Umbaus des Landesmuseums für die nächsten 4 Jahre quasi "obdachlos" ist. Das hält den WKV aber nicht davon ab, weitergehend Ausstellungen zu organisieren. Gut so! In der aktuellen Ausstellungen "Flüchtige Zeiten", die wie die Ausstellung "Over and Out" in der Herwarthstr. stattfindet, geht es um das Thema "der Flexibilität, sowie die Frage nach der Beliebigkeit und der Notwendigkeit für Nachhaltigkeit von Kultur". Vor diesem Hintergrund stellen insgesamt 18 internationale Künstler ihre Arbeiten aus: Lars Almarcegui, Ruth Ewan, Thomas Baldischwyler, Yorgo Sapountzis, Eran Schaerf, Amy Sillman, Danh Vo, Mona Vatamanu/Florin Tudor, _fabrics interseason, Lone Haugaard Madsen, Kora Jünger, Gabriel Kuri, Kitty Kraus, Lasse Lau, Valentina Liernur, Asier Mendizabal, Benoit Maire & Igor Sevcuk. Dieses Jahr hatte ich das Glück an der aktuellen Ausstellung des Hartware MedienKunstVerein (HMKV) in der PHOENIX Halle Dortmund mitarbeiten zu können. Titel der Ausstellung lautet "Wach sind nur die Geister - Über Gespenster und ihre Medien". Bei der Ausstellung geht es, wie der Titel vielleicht auch schon verrät, um die Anwesenheit von Geistern und die Kommunikation mit dem Jenseits durch technische Medien wie z.B. das Tonband. Insgesamt werden in der von Inke Arns und Thibaut de Ruyter kuratierten Ausstellung die Arbeiten von 22 internationalen Künstlern präsentiert, darunter Corinne May Botz (US), Erik Bünger (SE, Agnés Geoffray (FR), Kathrin Günter (DE), Sam Ashley (US), Joep van Liefland (NL), International Necronautical Society (GB), Jan-Peter E.R. Sonntag (DE) & Jorge Queiroz (PT).
Meine persönlichen Favoriten hatten sich bereits während den Vorbereitungen zur Ausstellung herauskristalisiert. Zum einen sind dies die Fotografien der Amerikanischen Künstlerin Corinne May Botz, die eine Auswahl aus ihrer Serie Haunted Houses zeigt, zum anderen die Hochfrequenz-Fotografien von Nina Fischer & Maroan el Sani. Absolut sehenswert! Eine andere Arbeit, die ich empfehlen kann sich anzusehen bzw. in diesem Fall auszuprobieren, ist die von Kathrin Günter. Ihre Arbeit "The Clearing Cabinet for Thoughtography and Intraocular Light" besteht aus mehreren "Intrakoluaren Lichbildkameras", die sie selbst entwickelt hat. Die Bilder die durch diese Art von Kamera entstehen dokumentieren das aus unseren Augen zurückstrahlende Licht. Leider bin ich bis dato noch nicht dazu gekommen, es selbst auszuprobieren. Ich habe mir aber von Freunden sagen lassen, dass man sich auf jeden Fall die halbe Stunde, solange dauert dieses Experiment nämlich, definitiv nehmen sollte. Eine andere Arbeit, die ich sehr interessant finde, ist "Black Box". Die Arbeit der International Necronautical Society, kurz INS, setzt sich aus einer Reihe von Texten aus den lokalen Medien zusammen, die der Schriftsteller Tom McCarthy (lese grad sein Buch "Remainder", aber dazu später mehr) speziell für die Ausstellung zusammengestellt hat. Diese können, aufgezeichnet auf einem Flugschreiber, 24/7 über UKW im Umkreis der PHOENIX Halle empfangen werden.
Die Ausstellung läuft noch bis zum 18. Oktober 2009. Eintritt ist 4 €/2 € ermäßigt. Wer also in Dortmund und Umgebung oder natürlich auch etwas weiter weg wohnt, sollte sich die Ausstellung nicht entgehen lassen. Und nein, dass sage ich nicht nur, weil ich an ihr mitgearbeitet habe. us

Roger, over and out

Ein verlassenes Bürogebäude (Herwarthstr.) & eine leere Industriehalle (beim Elefant am Hafen) dienen momentan als Locations für die Gruppenausstellung "Over and Out - Strategien des Be- und Umnutzens sowie Ent- und Bewertens von Dingen und Zusammenhängen". Sogleich ich ein Fan von unkonventionellen Locations als Ausstellungsraum ("Off-Spaces") bin, konnte ich mich dem Gefühl nicht verwehren, dass so manche Arbeit nur zustande gekommen ist, weil noch ein Raum frei war, getreu dem Motto "Bloß nix verkommen lassen." Insgesamt stellen 6 Künstler aus: Guido Münch, Angela Fette, Marcel Hiller, Sebastian Walther (@ Herwartstr.) & Lars Breuer und Sebastian Freytag (@ Industriehalle). In der Herwarthstr. dient die ganze 3. Etage als Ausstellungsfläche und obwohl diese hauptsächlich von zwei Künstlern, Marcel Müller (Paris) und Sebastian Walther (Wien) (zusammen mit weiteren Künstlern wie Sebastian Freytag, David Buckley und Michael Eric Diedrich), gestaltet wurde, ist die Zuordnung von Arbeit zu Künstler trotz Übersichtsplan oft nicht einfach. Ich bin der Meinung, dass das ein oder andere Label vor einem Raum oder/neben einer Arbeit nicht geschadet hätte. Etwas übersichtlicher sieht es da schon in der 2. Etage aus, da dort nur in 4 Räumen Arbeiten (Angela Fette, Guido Münch) präsentiert werden. All in all, ist es eine durchaus interessante Ausstellung, die wie ich denke vorallem auch durch ihre Location profitiert. Bürojalousien, aus Wänden heraushängende Telefonkabel, Gardrobenhaken, Staub und grüner Büroteppich tragen definitive zum ganz eigenen Charme dieser Ausstellung dazu. Die zweite Location befindet sich am Hafen gegenüber der AZKM in einer verlassenen Industriehalle, in der Lars Breuer und Sebastian Freytag ihre Arbeiten präsentieren. Leider kann man nicht direkt in die Halle, sondern kann sich die Arbeiten nur von Außen betrachten.
Die Ausstellung läuft noch in Zusammenhang mit der Ausstellung "Flüchtige Zeiten" des Westfälischen Kunstverein (s. Post) bis zum 15. November 2009. Eintritt ist 4 €/2 € ermäßigt. Alle weiteren Infos findet ihr hier. us

Stephan US, united silence, 2009 (Installationsansicht)

SHHHSHHHHSHHH! heißt nur eine der vielen Arbeiten, die zurzeit in der Ausstellungshalle zeitgenössische Kunst Münster (AZKM) gezeigt werden. Die Ausstellung mit dem Titel "Site of Silence" widmet sich ganz dem Thema "Stille". Sieben Künstler, aus Deutschland, den Niederlanden, Belgien, Japan und Israel versuchen auf ihre ganz persönliche Weise dieses Thema zu präsentieren. Zu sehen sind u.a. Installationen, Fotografien, skulpturale Objekte sowie ein Archiv. Mein persönliche Lieblingsarbeit ist die Installation "passant" (2007) von Suchan Kinoshita. Wer vor zwei Jahren die "skulptur projekte münster 07" besucht hat, erinnert sich vielleicht noch an ihre Arbeit "Chinese Whispers" (Stille Post). Ihre Arbeit "passant" soll einen Extremzustand des Hörens erzeugen. Und ich kann nur sagen, it certainly does! Alle 30 min erschallt eine Aufnahme der New Yorker Subway in der Ausstellung. Kinoshita's Arbeit bietet damit, wie ich finde, einen schönen Kontrast zu der allgemein herrschenden Stille in der Halle. Außerdem ist es sehr amüsant zu sehen wir sämtliche Besucher (ja, auch ich) plötzlich zusammen zucken, wenn die Aufnahme abgespielt wird, und sich danach verwirrt anschauen und wie verrückt in ihren Prospekten suchen, um heraus zu finden, was das denn da grad war. Bis noch auf die Arbeit von Andreas K. Schulze, der aus kleinen Baumwollquadraten die Buchstabenfolge SHHHSHHHHSHHH als Hommage an "SHHH/Peaceful" von Miles Davis geklebt hat, muss ich ehrlich gestehen, dass "Site of Silence" nicht zu meinen Lieblingsausstellungen der AZKM zählt. Aber das ist ja nur meine persönliche Meinung, überzeugt euch also selbst! Die Ausstellung ist noch bis zum 27. September zu sehen. Eintritt ist frei. us

Der Berliner Streetartist El Bocho gehört schon seit längerer Zeit zu den bekanntesten Streetart-Künstlern der Hauptstadt. Bekannt ist er vorallem für seine Kunstfigur Little Lucy. Der eine oder andere hat die kleine Göre bestimmt auch schon einmal beim Gang durch die Berliner City an diversen Hauswänden kleben sehen. Little Lucy gibt es aber auch in Buchform! Für die, die Little Lucy nicht kennen: Lucy ist ein kleines katzenhassendes Mädchen, dem es größtes Vergnügen bereitet, die eigenen oder auch die Katzen anderer auf sehr einfallsreiche Art und Weise zu quälen und zu foltern. Da kann die Katze dann auch schon mal als Kanonenfutter, Döner, Punchball, Schaukel und Stola enden. Oder wie in folgendem Auszug als Wasserleiche:

Sonntag, da ist Badetag,
und Lucy ja den Paten mag,
kriegt Kitti, weil sie auch nicht rennt,
von Lucy Schuhe aus Zement.
Doch schwimmen kann sie damit nicht,
nach unten zieht sie das Gewicht.
Das Resultat der dummen Streiche,
ist eine Katzenwasserleiche.

Die verschiedenen Episoden aus Lucy's Leben sind sehr amüsant und wie ich finde grafisch einfach genial. Ich kann "Little Lucy, die Berliner Streetartgöre" jedem nur empfehlen! Little Lucy gibt es allerdings nur in limitierter Auflage (500 Stck.). Also schnell ein Exemplar besorgen, bevor sie alle weg sind! "Little Lucy" gibt es hier & hier. Wer in Köln ist, sollte vielleicht mal hier schauen. us
